History of Hadimba Devi Temple , Manali (H.P)

Nestled in Manali’s cedar forest, the 16th-century Hadimba Devi Temple, also known as Dhungari Temple, is a unique pagoda-style shrine. Built-in 1553 CE by Maharaja Bahadur Singh, it is dedicated to Hidimba, wife of Bhima from the Mahabharata. Legend says she meditated here, attaining divine status, and is now worshipped as a goddess.

About Kath-Khuni Architecture

Kath-Khuni, derived from ‘Kath’ (wood) and ‘Khuni’ (corner), is a traditional Himalayan construction technique. Unlike conventional methods, it uses horizontal timber beams instead of vertical columns, reinforced with criss-cross bracings. Layers of stone between the wood enhance stability, while slate tiles cover the roofs, making these structures durable and earthquake-resistant.
