History of Bijli Mahadev Temple
Bijli Mahadev Temple, mentioned in the Puranas, is believed to have been originally built by the Pandavas during their exile, with the present structure dating back to the 20th century. According to legend, this sacred site marks Lord Shiva’s victory over the demon Kulanta, who attempted to submerge the Beas River Valley. To protect life, Shiva defeated the demon and restored balance.
Perched at 2,460m on Mathan Hill, 26 km from Kullu and 60 km from Manali, the temple is famous for its 60-foot flagpole, which attracts divine lightning. With each strike, the Shiva Linga shatters and is ritually restored by the priest using butter and Sattoo, a practice repeated annually.
About Kath-Khuni Architecture
Kath-Khuni, derived from ‘Kath’ (wood) and ‘Khuni’ (corner), is a traditional Himalayan construction technique. Unlike conventional methods, it uses horizontal timber beams instead of vertical columns, reinforced with criss-cross bracings. Layers of stone between the wood enhance stability, while slate tiles cover the roofs, making these structures durable and earthquake-resistant.
