History Of Bhimakali Temple, Sarahan (H.P ):

The Bhimakali Temple, an 800-year-old shrine dedicated to Goddess Durga, is one of the 51 sacred Shakti Peethas. Located near Chandigarh, the present structure was built in 1927, replacing an older temple with a unique history—it tilted during the 1905 earthquake but later straightened on its own.

According to legend, Sati Devi’s ear fell here during Daksha Yagna, making it a revered pilgrimage site. The temple is also linked to the battle between Lord Krishna and Banasura, with the demon king’s head believed to be buried near the entrance. A disused tunnel beneath the temple once connected it to the nearby village of Ranwin.

About Kath-Khuni Architecture

Kath-Khuni, derived from ‘Kath’ (wood) and ‘Khuni’ (corner), is a traditional Himalayan construction technique. Unlike conventional methods, it uses horizontal timber beams instead of vertical columns, reinforced with criss-cross bracings. Layers of stone between the wood enhance stability, while slate tiles cover the roofs, making these structures durable and earthquake-resistant.
